Game Day #24

THIBAULT AND THE HABS UPSET THE RANGERS!

By Martin Guindon
MFHLNet

(Montreal, October 13 1998) - The Canadiens might have problems beating the worst team in the MFHL, the New Jersey Devils, but when it comes to one of the best ones, like the New York Rangers, they can pull off a master performance and win! In fact, thanks to a brilliant game from netminder Jocelyn Thibault, who made 47 saves, the Habs beat the Blue Shirts 6-3.

Well, to be honest, Thibault is not the only responsible in the Rangers' demise. His opponent, Jon Casey, is also responsible, having allowed 6 goals on only 31 shots.

The Rangers started by taking a 2-0 lead in the first, with goals from Rem Murray and Dean McAmmond. But the Habs then exploded for 4 straight goals, those of Joe Nieuwendyk, Phil Housley, Alex Daigle (1-1) and Warren Rychel. In the third, leading scorer Peter Forsberg tried to bring his Rangers back into the game, but then the Canadiens put an end to all hopes with goals from Robert Dome and Martin Rucinsky.

With this win, the ever struggling Canadiens are now unbeaten in their last two games, but still dead last in the Northeast Division with a 7-15-2 record (16 points). They will next face the red hot Edmonton Oilers.

With this defeat, the Rangers have let the Philadelphia Flyers approach at one point from their first place in the Atlantic Division. They will now play hosts to the Tkachuk-less Phoenix Coyotes.

IN OTHER GAMES

(Edmonton) - Patrick Roy made 27 saves and led the Edmonton Oilers to a fourth straight unbeaten game and a 1-0 shutout over the Dallas Stars. The Oilers remain on top of the Northwest division, 4 points ahead of the Colorado Avalanche, who still have a game in hand however.

(Columbus) - The St-Louis Blues won an important 3-2 overtime game over division rivals Columbus Blue Jackets. Veteran defenceman Larry Murphy scored the game winner, only 2 seconds into the overtime period. Craig Johnson scored twice for the Blues.

(New Jersey) - Despite their decent performances in recent games, the New Jersey Devils remain a very weak team, as they have proved it once again yesterday, getting easily crushed 9-3 by the Detroit Wings who took a total of 70 shots on poor Corey Hirsch. Steve Yzerman (3-1) got a hat trick for the Wings. Wings are unbeaten in their last 7 games and lead the Central Division.

(New York) - Close call for the Ottawa Senators who were behind 3-0 against the New York Islanders half-way into the third period, but exploded for 3 goals, including one at 31 seconds before the end of the game to tie it 3-3. Ray Sheppard got a hat trick for the Islanders. The Islanders are winningless in their last 6 games.

(Calgary) - The Toronto Leafs are now unbeaten in their last 7 games, thanks to a tight 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames. The win goes to Felix Potvin, who made 27 saves.

(Vancouver) - Wade Flaherty made 27 saves to lead the Tampa Lightning to a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks. With this win, the Boltz are now unbeaten in their last 3 games and the Canucks have lost their last 3 straight games,

(Colorado) - Pat Lafontaine got 2 assists and led the Colorado Avalanche to an easy 3-1 win over the Washington Capitals. In fact, without Martin Brodeur making 45 great saves, the result would've been totally different. Avs are unbeaten in their last 5 games.

(Los Angeles) - The Los Angeles Kings aren't playing as well as they used too, but they still are winning. Trailing 4-1 to the Anaheim Ducks in the third, the Kings exploded for 4 straight goals in about 5 minutes to win the game 5-4. Geoff Courtnall scored twice for the Kings.

(San Jose) - The Atlanta Thrashers came back from behind in the third to beat the San Jose Sharks 4-3. JJ Daigneault got 3 assists in the game for the Thrashers. The Thrashers are still leading the Southeast Division and haven't lost any of their last 5 games.

(Buffalo) - Brian Smolinski (1-2) and Adam Oates led the Buffalo Sabres to a 6-4 win over the Minnesota Wild. The Wild are back at playing for .500, having lost their last 4 straight games.

(Florida) - Olaf Kolzig made 27 saves to lead the Boston Bruins to a 4-1 win over the Florida Panthers. This is a third straight win for the Bruins, while the Panthers remain winningless in their last 5 games.

(Philadelphia) - The Pittsburgh Penguins lost a fourth straight game, this time 3-2 to the Philadelphia Flyers, who are now unbeaten in their last 7 games. Brendan Shanahan was the hero of the game, scoring twice and getting an assist.
